Well, what a year it has been for walking football. It was precisely this time last year that we were first registered. It was an exciting time full of hope, and a time of chasing new players, negotiating for venues, trying to get the word out.
The aim of walking football was always to develop the game here in Brisbane, and further afield if possible. We now have 3 venues, 4 sessions a week. We have assisted Dominique at Coolum in getting organised and up and run ... er ...walking.
We have had a small but successful tournament at QUT Stadium, and we intend to run another one again in April. We have affiliated with the Walking Football Association to enable us to receive support from not only them but other countries too, and of course, we are all looking forward to the what lies ahead with the possibility of Overseas teams coming to Brisbane in 2019.
We also became a not-for-profit organisation in September. This enables us more flexibility in moving forward.
We also have many friends and contacts who all want to be part of the growth of walking football in the future, and I welcome them onboard when we kick off again in 2019. So, yes, it's been a great year, made possible by the persistence and, most importantly, the participation of people like yourselves, who have come along and enjoyed being a part of a great sporting and social outlet that did not exist this time last year.
When I first started this venture, I had no idea I would meet so many kind and generous people. It's been a privilege meeting and getting to know you all, and I'm certain we only have bigger and better things to come.
I wish you all good health and hope you will continue to be injury free in the long term, so we can all enjoy the precious memories that walking football affords us each time we are fortunate to play. I would like to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas, and I look forward to seeing ou all back in the new year for what should be another great 12 months.
Our very first Walking Football magazine was sent out on Facebook last week and has been very well received. A big thank you goes to our fellow walking footballer Stephen Thompson. It can be found here and is a very interesting read with player profiles, news, a debate on running/walking and lots more. Thank you, Stephen, for a great job well done. We have many ideas to take us forward in 2019. From an organiser's perspective, I would love to see Walking Football become united throughout the Brisbane region and NOT be divided. We have much work to do in achieving this and firstly we need to do more in attracting and retaining players.
It is hoped in the 3rd quarter of the year we could have enough players to create a small league, with teams still competing in a social manner. It is crucial we accommodate both leagues with one not being detrimental to the other.
We also intend to educate players about all aspects of walking football, such as coaching, refereeing, the rules of the game, behaviour and of course playing. We are all still in the learning process, but we have come a long way in 12 months. By this time next year, we would hope to have two competitions going with the more competitive players in one league and a social league for those not wanting a competitive outlook on the game. We will ensure that one division will not be detrimental to the other.
We will continue to accept players of either gender, support them as best we can and continue to ensure they all play in a safe, fun and social environment. There have been many positives taken from 2018, that we can carry into 2019 and we are confident it will be an even better year ahead for all concerned. Remember, patience is the key with any new venture.
